“I'VE NEVER TRIED TO pick up ladies with another lady before. I wonder how it changes the game?” Jun asked, inhaling deeply. The crowded bar in Blackwood smelled like liquor and smoke and sex. It was precisely the sort of bawdy establishment that Jun and Aura loved to frequent. Even though they shared a table and a bottle, Aura's hand was never far from her gun.

“I suggest we don't go together. I wouldn't want anyone to think I was your girlfriend,” Aura said.

“Aye. And I wouldn't want anyone to think I was your boyfriend.” Jun bummed a cigarette from Aura, and after a few puffs, he left it smoking in a tray. “So... you like ladies, then?”

“Ladies. Men. It makes no difference to me,” Aura said. “In a place like this, I usually focus on ladies. More often than not, the men are loutish pricks who are too drunk to find their dicks. No offense.”

Jun poured himself a drink and downed its contents with a grin. “None taken.”

“So...” Aura paused to pour a drink as well. “What sort of woman catches the eye of Captain Shiraishi? Enlighten me.”

“For a serious relationship, or a fling?” he asked.

“Either one.”

“Well, for a fling, I look for someone who's relatively clean, decent teeth, and breasts,” Jun said. “If I was looking for a more serious relationship... which I'm not... nothing beats a sense of humor.”

“And why wouldn't you be looking for something more serious? I have a feeling that you're lonely. Otherwise, you wouldn't have joined up with our little band as quickly as you did.”

“I am lonely,” Jun agreed. “I've lost everyone who ever mattered to me... but I don't think I'm going to find the love of my life in a place like this.” He reclaimed the bottle from Aura, and as he poured, he searched the room for a female companion. There was no shortage of options. He saw blondes, brunettes, and redheads. He found skinny girls, thicker girls, and everything in between. A moment later, he pointed at a dark-haired young lady and asked, “What do you think of her?”

“Her? In the corner?” Aura's lips sputtered. “She's too young and skinny for me, but you're welcome to her.”

Jun poured and downed another shot before approaching his target. When she saw him coming, he swore he saw her roll her eyes.

“Hello, beautiful,” he greeted her. “Are you alone? That's unfathomable! Why is a pretty girl like you all by her—”

“Let me save you the trouble,” the girl interrupted. “I ain't interested.”

“And why's that? Are you already spoken for?”

“No. I'm just not interested,” the woman reiterated, overenunciating every word. “Can I say it any plainer for you? Do I need to speak slower?”

“No, I... I understand you perfectly well.” Sliding backward, he added, “Good day to you, miss.”

Jun returned to the table with a grimace that told Aura everything she needed to know.

“That was brief... and you look troubled,” she observed. “I'm guessing it didn't go too well?”

“You're right. She shot me down.
